Measuring the Prevalence, Correlates, and Comorbidity of Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Epidemiology studies how health-related conditions or events are distributed in societies, what determines such distribution, and how such insights can be used to prevent and control health problems (Porta, 2014). Because they rarely have biomarkers, studying behavioral health conditions requires special attention to the assessment of individual symptoms and how symptom profiles constitute the presence and severity of diagnosable conditions. My research has involved literature reviews to assess sources of discrepancies in epidemiologic investigations, survey design and administration with various populations (including gay and bisexual men, non-commissioned officers, chaplains, military and veteran caregivers, and residents in coastal communities along the Gulf coast), psychometric analysis, and the development of new methods to estimate causal effects with observational data.
