      <image:title>Bio - About Me</image:title>
<image:caption>I am an epidemiologist who studies the prevalence, prevention, and treatment of substance use and mental health disorders. My research has focused on suicide prevention, behavioral health treatment, behavioral health epidemiology, military and veteran health, disasters and community resilience, and crime and justice. I have additional expertise in program evaluation and have co-authored two, freely available workbooks and additional tools to promote evaluation within community-based organizations. I have authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and my research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Justice, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, and private foundations. My commentary has been published in various media outlets and I have testified twice before the United States Congress and also before the California State Senate. I received my B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago and my Ph.D. in psychiatric epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I then worked for 12 years as a behavioral scientist at the RAND Corporation where I received two RAND Gold Medal Awards for my research on suicide prevention and one Presidential Award, RAND’s highest honor, for my work on military and veteran caregivers. Next, I served as Senior Vice President for Research at the Cohen Veterans Network where I established the organization’s research agenda and laid the foundation for conducting research within the network. I then became the inaugural Craig Newmark Fellow at the Bob Woodruff Foundation before returning to RAND in July 2020. I serve on the Board of Directors of Bastion Community of Resilience in New Orleans, LA and am a member of the School Life and Mission Committee of Canisius High School in Buffalo, NY; the Assessment and Intervention Standards Committee of the American Association of Suicidology; and the National Consortium for Preventing Law Enforcement Suicide. A full list of my publications can be found here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Crime, Violence, and Justice - Crime, Violence, and Justice</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2018, 3.3 million Americans (ages 12 and older) were victims of a violent crime and in 2016 (the most recent year data is available) there were over 6.6 million persons in the adult correctional system. In 2018, over 728,000 arrests were made of persons under 18. My research has examined predictors of youth delinquency, how criminal behavior changes as youth age, the impact of youth criminal justice involvement on long-term outcomes, as well as approaches to preventing victimization. In addition, there are over 765,000 law enforcement officers working in the U.S. today whose responsibility is to help keep communities safe. I have examined factors that impact police officer mental health and well-being and how the science suggests law enforcement agencies can foster better health among their employees so that the police can be more effective at their jobs. <image:caption>On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and spilling millions of gallons of crude oil into the waters. I co-led the Consortium for Resilient Gulf Communities Health Team from 2015 to 2018 to estimate the social, economic, and public health effects of the oil spill on coastal communities. We developed and administered the Survey of Trauma, Resilience, and Opportunity of Neighborhoods in the Gulf (STRONG), a probability-based survey of coastal communities that assessed exposure to the oil spill, health, and networked adaptive capacities. We re-interviewed the sample in 2018 after the Gulf Coast’s notorious Hurricane season (Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria), making STRONG one of the only longitudinal assessments of community residents before and after a disaster. <image:title>Behavioral Health Epidemiology - Measuring the Prevalence, Correlates, and Comorbidity of Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders</image:title>
<image:caption>Epidemiology studies how health-related conditions or events are distributed in societies, what determines such distribution, and how such insights can be used to prevent and control health problems (Porta, 2014). Because they rarely have biomarkers, studying behavioral health conditions requires special attention to the assessment of individual symptoms and how symptom profiles constitute the presence and severity of diagnosable conditions. My research has involved literature reviews to assess sources of discrepancies in epidemiologic investigations, survey design and administration with various populations (including gay and bisexual men, non-commissioned officers, chaplains, military and veteran caregivers, and residents in coastal communities along the Gulf coast), psychometric analysis, and the development of new methods to estimate causal effects with observational data. <image:caption>The Iraq War began in March 2003; since then over 3 million American men and women have deployed in support of U.S. military operations. Early in my time at RAND, I was fortunate to be part of the study team that wrote Invisible Wounds of War, the first independent assessment of the the psychological and cognitive injuries experienced by the men and women who deployed in support of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. I served as Associate Director of RAND’s Center for Military Health Policy Research from 2011 to 2012 and have continued to conduct research on PTSD prevalence and treatment among U.S. service members and veterans and suicide risk and prevention among these groups.
